Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING November 11, 2010 The meeting was called to order by President Aileen Colon at 6:00 pm. The other members of the Executive Board present were: Vice President Terence Endersen, John Forstrom, Secretary Jeff Miller, and Treasurer Robert O'Connor. Executive Board members Elizabeth Borsting, Julie Dean, Adam Hattan, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, and Heidi Van Horn were absent. Twenty-four additional BSRA members and visitors were present. LBPD East Division Commander Lisa Lopez reported the current status of these issues: the highest crime types in this area are residential burglaries, auto burglaries, and auto theft. Two suspects are still being sought in the recent "cat burglaries" in Belmont Shore. Crime alerts and updates are now available on line via a new service at nixle.com. Finally, she cautioned about recent thefts of mail from the standard blue public mailboxes. Christine Hsu, the new owner of the restaurant "Me Soo Hungry", spoke briefly about the restaurant and invited audience members to taste the food samples she brought. The meeting agenda and the minutes of the October 14 meeting were approved. Marsha Jeffer, owner of Mailboxes Etc., spoke about packing requirements for successful shipping, and demonstrated proper packing techniques. Dave Roseman, City Traffic Engineer, spoke about the plan to install traffic signals at the intersection of Pomona Avenue and Second Street, but the installation is not yet scheduled due to lack of funding. He discussed the pros and cons of signals at Claremont Avenue. There is a concern that this would increase traffic on Claremont, coming from Ocean Blvd. Also, safety is a concern at that intersection because of a proposal by the Parking Commission to erect a "gateway" sign over Second Street with advertising banners that could distract drivers from the traffic signal. Dede Rossi, Executive Director of the BSBA, announced the schedule for the Christmas Parade and noted that chairs could not be placed on the sidewalk until 5 pm. The parade is December 4, from 7 - 10 pm. Julie Maleki from Third District Councilman Gary Delong's office announced the scheduled completion of the Park Avenue storm drain work is November 15. Secretary Jeff Miller requested the payment of $15 to Media Temple for the annual registration of the BSRA internet domain name; a motion authorizing payment was approved unanimously. A second motion was approved unanimously to mail membership renewal notices to members in arrears, at a cost not to exceed $100. Treasurer Robert O'Connor reported the checking account balance is about $3,883.57. President Aileen Colon noted the recent meeting of the Beach Committee at Councilman DeLong's office. Bill Sheehan reported these items from that meeting: improved signage will be implemented at the dog beach, an additional vendor has requested space at the Claremont parking lot for kite surfing lessons, a proposal to combine the Claremont and 54th parking lots, and outdoor showers and a parking kiosk are planned at that location. The next committee meeting will be January 20, 2011. Vice President Terence Endersen reported Mayor Foster has appointed Eric Forsberg as the resident representative to the Parking Commission, despite the request by BSRA that he honor the selection of Mr. Endersen as the resident representative. Endersen will continue to represent the residents on behalf of the BSRA at the commission meetings. He noted these other items from the last meeting: Plans to spend $55,000 for design work for Second Street overhead advertising banners, status of the sidewalk trees on Second Street, the Park Avenue parking lot repaving and landscaping work, additional bicycle racks on Second Street sidewalks, and plans for the Tori Busch memorial drinking fountain at Rite Aid. A motion by John Forstrom to send a letter of support for revocation of the entertainment permit at Evo Lounge was approved unanimously. The hearing will be at the City Council meeting November 16. The meeting was adjourned at 7:58 pm. Submitted by: Jeff Miller, Recording Secretary
